Does a Uniform Blasted Finish Mean the Surface Roughness Is Acceptable?

A uniform appearance after abrasive blasting does not, by itself, demonstrate compliance with a surface roughness requirement. Visual inspection and quantitative surface measurements should be defined separately against the drawing and the intended use of the part.
Define the inspection target
For appearance, agree on a reference sample, lighting and the areas to inspect. For a numerical requirement, specify the parameter, unit, acceptance range and measurement method. A photograph is useful evidence of appearance, but it is not a substitute for measurement.
Keep surface profile and roughness parameters distinct
Blast surface profile height and individual roughness parameters should not be treated as interchangeable simply because they share a unit. Confirm what the drawing requires before choosing an instrument and inspection procedure.
Mark the measurement locations
Number the inspection points on a drawing or photograph. Link each result to a sample identification, date and processing conditions. If results disagree, first check whether the same location, parameter and method were used.
Prepare an acceptance record
Include part identification, material, areas to blast and protect, appearance reference, measured parameter, acceptance limits, measurement method, locations and sampling rules. One reading from one sample cannot establish conformity of an entire batch.
Can a part be accepted from a photograph alone?
A photograph can support an agreed visual check. Where a numerical surface requirement applies, acceptance also requires inspection using the agreed method.
For an Aihang equipment discussion, prepare part drawings or photographs, material, dimensions, production requirements and acceptance criteria. Equipment configuration and achievable results depend on trials with representative parts and the agreed technical specification.
